International Spanish theatre and film specialist Professor Maria Delgado from Queen Mary, University of London is confirmed to deliver key-note address at the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland annual conference in Exeter, April 2015.

In April 2015 the University of Exeter will host the international subject association conference for Hispanic Studies, co-organised by Professor Sally Faulkner, Dr Katharine Murphy, Dr Jon Bradbury and Allison Brett. The key-note lecture will be delivered by Professor Maria Delgado Theatre and Screen Arts at Queen Mary, University of London. Over 100 delegates are expected to attend.

Professor Sally Faulkner said of the event: "The Department of Modern Languages is delighted to host this important subject association conference, which features the work of scholars and postgraduate students in the multi-disciplinary and international fields of peninsular Spanish Studies, Latin-American Studies, peninsular Portuguese Studies and Lusophone Studies. The conference marks a number of key dates: it is 60 years since the founding of the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland and it is the quincentenary of the birth of Spanish mystic and nun, Santa Teresa de Ávila, papers on whose work feature in the conference programme.

Finally, the academic year 2014-15 marks the launch of Portuguese at Exeter, as a language that can be taken at Combined Honours level, like our other languages French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Russian and Mandarin Chinese (also new this year). Events of special note include key-note addresses by Latin-American Studies expert Professor Catherine Davies (Nottingham/ Institute of Modern Languages Research) and Screen Studies specialist Professor Maria Delgado (Queen Mary, London) as well as a panel of leading journalists who specialize in Spanish affairs, William Chislett (Elcano Royal Institute), John Hooper (The Guardian & The Observer) and Giles Tremlett (The Guardian and The Economist)."
